EasyJet has suggested that European Union baggage regulations could distort competition by forcing all airlines to adopt similar pricing structures regardless of business model differences.
The legislative proposal under consideration would fundamentally alter baggage policies across European air travel. Parliamentary approval has advanced regulations that would mandate free cabin baggage allowances for all passengers on EU-based carriers.
The airline’s leadership argues that competitive markets benefit from business model diversity. Budget carriers offering unbundled pricing compete alongside full-service airlines with inclusive fares, giving passengers genuine choice based on individual priorities.
Regulatory mandates requiring standardized baggage policies would reduce this competitive diversity, potentially harming consumers by limiting the range of available service offerings and pricing approaches in the marketplace.
Beyond competition concerns, the regulations would eliminate crucial ancillary revenue streams. EasyJet generates billions annually from optional services including baggage fees. The carrier reported quarterly losses of £93 million while pursuing growth through route expansion.
