EU Investments in Indonesia Hindered by Ongoing Regulatory Ambiguity

Published on

Denis Chaibi, the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, has pointed out significant hurdles facing European investors in Indonesia, primarily due to regulatory uncertainty and lack of cohesive coordination among government ministries. These challenges, he noted, are critical issues that need to be addressed to enhance the business environment for European enterprises seeking to invest in the Southeast Asian nation.

Chaibi emphasized that for European investors to feel more confident in their ventures within Indonesia, there needs to be a consistent and predictable regulatory framework. This stability is especially crucial as both Indonesia and the European Union gear up to roll out their comprehensive economic partnership agreement, which has been much anticipated.

The forthcoming agreement between Indonesia and the EU holds promise for expanding trade and investment opportunities. However, Chaibi cautioned that without tackling the regulatory roadblocks, it will be difficult for Indonesia to attract and sustain European investment. Strengthening investor confidence through regulatory reforms and improved inter-ministerial coordination could serve as vital steps in this direction.

The economic partnership agreement is expected to open up new avenues, creating a mutually beneficial relationship by facilitating easier trade and boosting investment flows. Nonetheless, the success of this partnership hinges on Indonesia’s ability to address the existing challenges that European businesses face, thereby making the investment climate more conducive and welcoming.
