Singapore and Indonesia Emphasize Adherence to Gas Supply Contracts Amid Reduced Exports

Published on

Amid ongoing concerns over natural gas supply reductions, Singapore and Indonesia have reiterated their commitment to fulfilling existing contractual obligations. This assurance comes as Indonesia recently decreased its pipeline gas exports to Singapore by 31 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD), prioritizing domestic energy needs. Despite the reduction, Jakarta maintains that the adjustments are within the limits specified in their agreements with Singapore.

During a visit to Jakarta, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan emphasized the importance of honoring contracts. He highlighted that adhering to these commitments is crucial for the credibility and competitiveness of both economies. Balakrishnan called for a balanced consideration of actions and public statements made by both governments regarding this issue.

Earlier, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had urged suppliers to adhere to their agreements, with Singapore indicating a potential pursuit of remedies should Indonesia be found in breach of commercial contracts. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia defended the supply reduction, citing the agreement’s allowance for cuts of up to 92 BBTUD. He also dismissed Singapore’s criticisms of Indonesia’s adherence to its contractual obligations.

Communication between Singaporean and Indonesian leadership, including discussions with President Prabowo Subianto, has taken place at the highest levels. However, Balakrishnan did not provide details of these conversations.

Before the recent reduction, Indonesia had been supplying approximately 409.55 BBTUD of natural gas to Singapore via pipeline networks, alongside shipments of liquefied natural gas. As the two nations navigate these tensions, both continue to stress the importance of bilateral cooperation and the mutual benefits of honoring established agreements.
