Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for bringing to life iconic characters such as Optimus Prime from the Transformers franchise and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed that Cullen died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen launched his career in Canadian television and radio before becoming a prominent figure in the world of voice acting. His breakthrough came in 1984 when he first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series, a role he reprised in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, as well as in numerous spin-offs. Cullen’s portrayal of the heroic Autobot leader left an indelible mark on fans, solidifying his status as an integral part of the franchise.
Cullen’s talent extended beyond the realm of robots in disguise. He became the voice behind Eeyore, the endearingly gloomy donkey from the Winnie the Pooh series, a role he embodied in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous subsequent adaptations across television, film, and video games. His ability to capture the essence of such diverse characters demonstrated his versatility and breadth as a voice actor.
