Jakarta and New York are exploring the possibility of a visit by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to the Indonesian capital. This follows a recent meeting between Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in New York, where the two discussed various urban challenges.
During their meeting, which took place at the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, Mamdani and Pramono addressed shared issues such as public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and urban development financing. Although there is no confirmation yet on whether Mamdani will attend a conference in Jakarta later this month, discussions are ongoing and remain in the early stages, according to Governor Pramono.
Mamdani showed particular interest in Jakarta’s efforts to mitigate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation systems. Governor Pramono shared insights about the Transjabodetabek project, a regional transportation network aimed at improving connectivity between Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
The discussions also included topics on municipal financing. Pramono introduced Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds, known as Jakarta Bonds, to fund infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mamdani proposed facilitating a collaboration between the finance teams of New York and Jakarta to exchange expertise on municipal bond issuance.
While the potential visit by Mayor Mamdani remains unconfirmed, the dialogue between the two cities highlights a mutual commitment to addressing urban challenges through collaboration and shared learning.
