Concerns have been raised by Thailand over China’s recent shipment of tanks to Cambodia, as it could potentially jeopardize the stability of the fragile ceasefire that has been in place between the two neighboring countries since last year’s deadly border clashes. This issue was brought to light by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to the Thai foreign ministry. Officials have indicated that the timing and manner of this military delivery could further strain the already delicate relationship between Thailand and Cambodia, despite numerous attempts to maintain peace through ceasefire agreements.

Under an existing military cooperation agreement, Cambodia received 39 Chinese-made T-59D battle tanks. However, Thai authorities have clarified that there is no evidence of these tanks being stationed near the contentious border. The history of tensions between Thailand and Cambodia largely stems from disputes over land and maritime boundaries, which have their roots in colonial-era treaties and maps, posing significant obstacles in diplomatic negotiations.

China has defended its military collaborations with both Thailand and Cambodia, asserting that these activities are standard practices and are not intended to target any third party. Earlier in the year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette, further emphasizing its ongoing defense relationship with the Southeast Asian nation.

Despite the challenges, Thai officials have acknowledged China’s impartial approach and its endeavors to de-escalate tensions. They stressed, however, that the resolution of the conflict ultimately hinges on direct discussions between Thailand and Cambodia. In a constructive move, Thailand and China have decided to create a new dialogue mechanism that will involve their respective foreign and defense ministers. The inaugural round of these talks is expected to prioritize efforts to tackle cross-border scam operations, aiming to foster greater cooperation and understanding between the nations.
