The Malaysian team is gearing up for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4, with a clear goal in mind—to bring home a total of 33 medals. This ambitious target includes six golds, seven silvers, and 20 bronzes. According to Malaysia’s Chef de Mission, Mohd Sumali Reduan, this goal is well within reach considering the current form of the athletes, their recent performances, and the level of competition they will face from other Asian countries.
Focusing on their strengths, Malaysia has singled out 13 sports disciplines where they have a strong chance of winning medals. These sports include track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, squash, sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. This strategic focus is designed to maximize their medal haul and showcase the athletes’ hard work and dedication on a continental stage.
The Malaysian delegation heading to the Asian Games will comprise 352 athletes, supported by 185 officials. This sizable contingent will compete in 156 events across 30 of the 43 sports featured at the Games, demonstrating Malaysia’s commitment to showcasing its sporting talent and strengthening its presence in international competitions.
Among the athletes, wushu competitor Tan Cheong Min has been chosen to carry Malaysia’s flag during the opening ceremony, a role that symbolizes her status as a key figure in the team. Another prominent athlete, track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang, is also expected to play a crucial role in Malaysia’s medal pursuit, bringing his experience and skill to the fore in the competition.
Alongside their main Asian Games campaign, Malaysia is also setting sights on success at the Asian Para Games, which will run from October 18 to 24. Here, the contingent aims to secure an additional six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals, further highlighting the nation’s dedication to excellence in a wide range of sporting disciplines.
