Indonesia Aims to Boost Economic Influence in Global AI Initiative

Published on

Indonesia has taken a significant step in the realm of artificial intelligence by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This initiative underscores its commitment to international AI collaboration. In a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto conveyed the nation’s dedication to establishing a governance framework for AI. The focus of this framework is on promoting equitable development, prioritizing human-centered innovation, upholding national sovereignty, fostering inclusive multilateralism, and adhering to United Nations principles.

As part of its engagement with WAICO, Indonesia has shown interest in securing an influential role within the organization’s secretariat. The country is also seeking to strengthen its cooperation with China, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Minister Airlangga emphasized the need for quicker market access for Indonesian products and extended an invitation to Chinese companies to increase their investments in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and the development of industrial parks.

In a broader context, Indonesia has reiterated its support for China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. Minister Airlangga proposed organizing a bilateral business summit to coincide with a planned high-level meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit aims to further enhance economic cooperation between the two nations.

Through these strategic initiatives, Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in the global AI landscape while simultaneously seeking to deepen its economic ties with China. The country’s active participation in WAICO and its ambitious proposals reflect a broader vision of leveraging international partnerships to drive national development and innovation in the technology sector.
