In a decisive move to protect children online, Ofcom has unveiled strict new regulations compelling tech companies to block harmful content or face severe penalties. Beginning 25 July, platforms including social media, gaming, and search sites must fully comply with these measures under the UK’s groundbreaking Online Safety Act—or risk hefty fines and potential shutdowns.

More than 40 guidelines have been released, targeting platforms frequented by minors. High-risk services, particularly major social media networks, must implement robust age-verification tools to restrict under-18 access to adult or dangerous material. Algorithms that suggest content must now actively filter out harmful posts, and all platforms must ensure swift removal of threatening content. Children must also be provided with an easy, accessible way to report harmful material.

“This marks a reset for the digital lives of our children,” said Ofcom Chief Executive Melanie Dawes. “We are making sure platforms prioritize safety over profit, with less harmful content, stronger age checks, and better protection from strangers.”

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle echoed the urgency, calling the new rules a “watershed moment” in confronting online toxicity. He also revealed ongoing research into the potential of a nationwide “social media curfew” for minors, following TikTok’s recent move to restrict usage after 10pm for users under 16.

However, not all voices are satisfied. Ian Russell, father of 14-year-old Molly who tragically died after consuming harmful online content, criticized the regulations as too cautious. His Molly Rose Foundation insists the codes lack the strength to combat dangerous trends, such as online challenges and unmoderated suicide-related content.

As the digital age evolves, these measures represent a pivotal effort to ensure the online world becomes a safer space for the next generation—though campaigners stress that real impact will depend on rigorous enforcement and continuous reform.
