A Tale of Two Cafes: Savoring Island Life on Styrsö and Donsö

Published on

The islands of Styrsö and Donsö, connected by a bridge, offer a delightful cafe-hopping experience for visitors to the Gothenburg archipelago. From a historic inn on Styrsö to a trendy harborside spot on Donsö, these two cafes provide a delicious glimpse into the heart of Swedish island culture.
On Styrsö, make your way to Café Öbergska. This charming establishment is housed in a building that was once an inn owned by wealthy pickled herring barons, and its historic character is palpable. It’s the perfect place to partake in the Swedish ritual of fika. Order a coffee and choose between a classic cinnamon bun or a decadent chokladbollar (Swedish chocolate ball) and enjoy a relaxing break.
After enjoying Styrsö, a short and scenic bike ride across the bridge will take you to the neighboring island of Donsö and its vibrant harbor. Here you’ll find Popsicle, a cafe with a more modern, breezy vibe. Owned by two Donsö-born sisters, this spot is a local favorite, known for its friendly atmosphere and delicious food.
Popsicle’s menu is a celebration of local and homemade ingredients. The sisters source produce from friends, and their mother-in-law bakes the tasty breads and cakes. It’s the perfect place for an al fresco lunch by the water, and their weekly live music events draw a cheerful crowd.
Visiting these two distinct cafes offers more than just good food and coffee; it’s a way to experience the unique personality of each island. From the historic charm of Café Öbergska to the lively, community-focused spirit of Popsicle, you’ll get a true and tasty sense of what makes this corner of the Swedish archipelago so special.
