What, when, and how you feed your pet during travel can have a big impact on their comfort and well-being. A smart feeding strategy can prevent motion sickness, keep energy levels stable, and maintain a sense of routine.
The “less is more” rule before travel. It’s a common mistake to feed a pet a large meal right before a trip, but this can lead to nausea and vomiting. Instead, provide a light meal about two to three hours before you depart. This gives them time to digest while ensuring they don’t have a full stomach during the journey.
Hydration is more important than food. While you should be cautious with meals, you should be generous with water. Dehydration can happen quickly, especially in a warm car or dry airplane cabin. Offer fresh water at every break. Using water from home can also help prevent the stomach upset that can sometimes be caused by different water in a new location.
Stick to their diet and schedule. Travel is not the time to introduce new foods or fancy treats. Pack their regular kibble or food to maintain dietary consistency. Try to feed them their main meals around their usual times to provide a comforting sense of routine amidst the new experiences of travel.
