Your Sanctuary Awaits: 10 Peaceful Edinburgh Spots to Recharge

Published on

The Edinburgh Festival brings a wave of excitement, but also a sea of people. When you need a break from the action, a local writer suggests ten peaceful spots to find your sanctuary. From tranquil parks to quiet coastal paths, these locations offer a perfect opportunity to unwind and see a different side of the city.
In the heart of the city, the hidden closes on the Royal Mile provide a surprising escape. Dunbar’s Close is a beautiful 17th-century garden perfect for a quiet moment with a coffee from Santu, while Lady Stair’s Close is home to the peaceful Writers’ Museum. These tiny havens are just steps away from the festival’s main thoroughfare. For a larger green space, the Royal Botanic Garden offers a sprawling 72 acres of lush greenery and stunning views of the Edinburgh skyline.
For a seaside escape, Portobello beach is a classic choice. Its long, sandy stretch means you can easily find a quiet spot away from the crowds. Enjoy a fishfinger sarnie from Shrimp Wreck or some pizza from Civerino’s as you watch the waves. Alternatively, head to Newhaven harbour, a picturesque spot where you can grab fish and chips from The Fishmarket and watch the boats. You can even walk to the hidden Wardie Bay for a quick swim.
For a more urban but equally peaceful experience, the neighborhood of Stockbridge is a great choice. You can pick up gourmet picnic items from Herbie of Edinburgh or Mootz General Store and enjoy them in Inverleith Park, a beautiful green space with a pond and mature trees. The Union Canal is another excellent option, offering a long, serene path past houseboats and historical aqueducts, perfect for a long, meditative walk.
