As he prepares for a four-day official visit to Malaysia, Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has underscored the importance of nurturing the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Malaysia. Despite occasional tensions, President Tharman believes that mutual respect and understanding have been the pillars of their bilateral relations for over sixty years. He emphasized that both nations have consistently opted for dialogue and international law to address sensitive issues, rather than letting disputes hinder broader cooperation.
President Tharman has pointed to the increasing collaboration between the two countries in various sectors as a testament to their robust relationship. Key areas of cooperation include economic integration, renewable energy initiatives, talent development, and significant cross-border infrastructure projects. Notably, projects like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link demonstrate the commitment of both nations to work together towards mutual growth and development.
In addition to bilateral relations, President Tharman highlighted the significance of deeper integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He stressed that maintaining a rules-based international order is crucial for ensuring regional peace and stability, a sentiment that resonates with the broader goals of both Singapore and Malaysia within the ASEAN framework.
President Tharman also indicated that continued engagement between leaders, businesses, and ordinary citizens from both countries is vital for building long-term trust. By fostering these connections, he believes Singapore and Malaysia can remain steadfast partners amid an increasingly uncertain global landscape. This approach not only solidifies bilateral ties but also positions both nations as reliable collaborators on the international stage.
