Indonesia and Australia Begin Major Military Exercise in East Java

Published on

In a bid to bolster bilateral defense relations, Indonesia and Australia have commenced the Keris Woomera 26 joint military exercise in Banyuwangi, East Java. Running from October 12 to 20, the exercise is designed to enhance the military cooperation between the two nations, involving approximately 1,235 Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel and 1,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel.

Vice Admiral Justin Jones, the Australian Joint Operations Commander, emphasized the exercise as a reflection of the deep-rooted partnership between Indonesia and Australia, characterized by trust and mutual respect. He highlighted the significance of Indonesia as a crucial partner and noted that these drills represent Australia’s largest overseas military training activity for the year.

The joint exercise encompasses a range of activities, including amphibious landings, live-fire drills, and coordinated maritime operations conducted by the navies of both countries. The primary aim is to improve joint operational capabilities, confront regional deployment challenges, and enhance deterrence against military coercion in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australia has brought significant military assets to the exercise, including the amphibious ship HMAS Choules, HMAS Perth, and HMAS Stalwart, along with C-130J Hercules aircraft, PC-21 aircraft, M777 howitzers, and HIMARS launchers. Indonesia is participating with a Diponegoro-class corvette, artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, Bell 412 and Panther helicopters, and Super Tucano aircraft.

First established in 2024, the Keris Woomera exercise is conducted biennially, offering both nations an opportunity to refine military coordination and strengthen regional security cooperation. This iteration underscores the commitment of both countries to maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
