Indonesia Urges Transparent Process in Selection of Next UN Secretary-General

Published on

As the selection process for the next United Nations Secretary-General unfolds, Indonesia is advocating for a transparent and impartial approach that adheres to the UN Charter. Highlighting the importance of strong leadership to bolster multilateral cooperation in these times of heightened global tensions, Indonesia is closely observing the proceedings following the seventh round of informal voting at the UN Security Council on October 30.

Emphasizing the need for the next Secretary-General to unite nations and promote respect for international law, Indonesia also calls for reforms within the United Nations to ensure that developing countries have a stronger voice in global decision-making. Jakarta stresses that the UN must deliver meaningful results for its member states, reinforcing the need for an open and fair selection process.

The race for the position has gained attention with the recent nomination of Lana Nusseibeh by the United Arab Emirates. Among the frontrunners are Rebeca Grynspan, a former vice president of Costa Rica and current head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Additionally, Turkey has put forward Feridun Sinirlioglu, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, as a candidate.

With several contenders vying for the role, the selection process remains inconclusive. The successor to current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will complete his term at the end of 2026, is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027. Indonesia’s call for a credible and impartial process underscores the significance of choosing a leader capable of navigating the complexities of international diplomacy and cooperation.
