Japan to Supply Malaysia with ¥1.65 Billion Anti-Drone System for Maritime Security

Published on

In a move to enhance regional security cooperation, Japan has agreed to provide Malaysia with a counter-drone system valued at ¥1.65 billion. This agreement, signed by Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Malaysia’s Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin in Tokyo, falls under Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework, which supplies defense equipment to allied nations.

The Royal Malaysian Navy will benefit from this system, which is equipped with radar and cameras designed to detect and identify suspicious unmanned aerial vehicles. Additionally, the system has the capability to capture drones using nets, marking a first for Japan in supplying this type of equipment through the OSA program.

This initiative aims to bolster Malaysia’s capacity to monitor critical maritime routes, especially around the Strait of Malacca, a key global shipping corridor. The agreement is timely, given the growing regional concerns over maritime security and activities in the South China Sea, where Malaysia and China have ongoing territorial disputes despite strong economic relations.

Japan’s assistance seeks to enhance Malaysia’s surveillance capabilities, contributing to stability across essential maritime areas in the Indo-Pacific region. This cooperation underscores Japan’s commitment to supporting regional partners in maintaining security amid complex geopolitical challenges.
