Myanmar Aims to Strengthen ASEAN Ties to Boost Economic Investment

Published on

In a bid to bolster ties with Southeast Asian nations and lure foreign investment, Myanmar’s military-backed leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has embarked on an official visit to Vietnam. The visit to Hanoi signifies Myanmar’s efforts to rekindle regional relationships, as Min Aung Hlaing plans to engage in high-level discussions with Vietnamese President To Lam and other key officials. Additionally, he is set to participate in a business forum alongside members of his Cabinet, underscoring Myanmar’s intention to enhance economic cooperation.

Historically, Myanmar and Vietnam have shared strong military and economic links. However, recent years have seen a decline in bilateral trade, prompting Myanmar to seek renewed economic collaboration. This visit is part of a broader diplomatic initiative by Min Aung Hlaing, who, since assuming the presidency in April, has increased international engagements, visiting several countries across Asia and Europe.

Min Aung Hlaing’s diplomatic efforts come on the heels of strained relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) following the 2021 military takeover in Myanmar. The country has faced curtailed participation in ASEAN’s high-level meetings due to its failure to implement the bloc’s peace plan. Furthermore, Western nations have imposed sanctions on Min Aung Hlaing and his associates, citing the military coup and subsequent human rights violations.

The visit to Vietnam can be seen as part of Myanmar’s strategy to restore its regional ties and improve its international image. By engaging with Vietnam, Myanmar’s leadership is looking to signal a willingness to re-engage with the region, potentially opening doors to new avenues of trade and investment. This outreach reflects a broader agenda to rebuild Myanmar’s economic and diplomatic relationships on the international stage.
