Nuclear Arms Reduction a “Post-Crisis” Goal for Trump and Putin

Published on

President Donald Trump has identified a significant “post-crisis” goal shared with Russian President Vladimir Putin: the potential reduction of their countries’ nuclear arsenals. This was revealed as Trump updated reporters on his recent diplomatic activities.
The discussion on nuclear arms took place during a meeting in Alaska on August 15, according to Trump. This long-term strategic conversation indicates a dialogue extending beyond the immediate conflict in Ukraine.
More recently, Trump’s focus has been on that conflict. He held a phone call with Putin after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders on August 18 to discuss Ukraine’s security.
On that front, Trump is advocating for a security model where European nations provide the primary guarantees. He stated the U.S. would provide “backup,” signaling a supportive but not leading role for America.
