Moscow – President Vladimir Putin has sent a clear two-part message to the West: Russia holds the “initiative” in the Ukraine war, and the supply of advanced missiles will be met with a severe response. He backed the first part of his message by claiming a 5,000 sq km territorial gain this year.
The claim of holding the “complete strategic initiative” was made to his top military commanders, a statement designed to project control and confidence. He insisted that Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory could not alter this reality.
The second part of his message was a direct warning to the United States. Putin stated that the provision of Tomahawk long-range missiles to Ukraine would trigger a “qualitatively new stage of escalation” and would lead to the destruction of the relationship between Moscow and Washington.
While Russia focused on its strategic position, Ukraine highlighted a different kind of threat. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of using its oil tanker fleet for spying and sabotage.
Zelenskyy affirmed that this tactic would not go unanswered. He stated that Ukraine is working with its allies to formulate a response, expressing his belief that “it is entirely possible to stop” these covert operations.
