In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội on September 5. During this meeting, both leaders committed to enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. This visit marked Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural trip to Vietnam in his new capacity, where Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s backing of Myanmar’s endeavors towards achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic advancement.
President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its growing influence on both regional and international stages. He expressed a keen interest in drawing lessons from Vietnam’s development trajectory. Moreover, Min Aung Hlaing assured of Myanmar’s dedication to preserving its longstanding friendship and comprehensive collaboration with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in their countries’ bilateral relations and emphasized the need to boost high-level exchanges and foster political trust. They also advocated for the revival of crucial cooperation frameworks in areas such as trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security cooperation is poised to become a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Myanmar relationship. The two nations have set their sights on intensifying efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans are also in place to expand military training, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and collaborate on addressing non-traditional security challenges.
Economic cooperation featured prominently in their discussions as well. Both parties agreed to explore avenues to enhance trade and to update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese businesses to invest in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. In addition, the leaders deliberated on improving infrastructure and air connectivity, including restoring direct flights and developing joint tourism initiatives, with a focus on spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam committed to collaborating with ASEAN partners to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both countries advocated for peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law. During the meeting, Hưng invited Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội slated for November 2026. In turn, President Min Aung Hlaing extended an invitation to Hưng for a visit to Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time.
