Nobel Committee Rebuffs Trump’s “Peace Through Strength” Doctrine

Published on

Donald Trump’s “peace through strength” doctrine was officially rebuffed by the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday, as they awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, an advocate of non-violent, collaborative change. The decision signals a deep philosophical disagreement with the former president’s approach to foreign policy.
Trump’s supporters have long argued that his willingness to project power and disrupt norms has led to peace agreements that traditional diplomacy could not achieve. They see his methods as a necessary and effective way to deal with a dangerous world.
The Nobel committee, however, endorsed a different path to peace. By honoring Machado for unifying Venezuela’s opposition, they celebrated the power of consensus-building, dialogue, and a shared commitment to democratic principles. This is the path of “peace through fraternity.”
The White House’s reaction to the decision only served to highlight this ideological divide. The statement’s focus on Trump’s “sheer force of will” and his ability to “move mountains” reinforces the very “strength” doctrine that the committee chose to look past.
The 2025 prize is, therefore, more than just a choice between two individuals. It is a choice between two competing theories of peace. The committee has made its preference for cooperation over coercion abundantly clear.
