As the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. He emphasized the need for a lasting political solution, expanded humanitarian efforts, and adherence to international law as steps toward resolving the ongoing conflict.
Guterres condemned the Hamas attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and the capture of 251 hostages. He also drew attention to the severe impact on Palestinians, noting the significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction in Gaza. According to health authorities in Gaza, more than 74,200 Palestinians have died due to Israel’s military actions in the region.
The UN chief acknowledged a ceasefire declared in October 2025, which had offered some respite. However, he stressed that it has yet to bring about lasting security, adequate humanitarian aid, or a credible path to recovery and peace. Guterres urged all parties to work towards ending the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians, emphasizing the importance of creating conditions where both communities can live securely, with dignity and their rights protected.
The call for a ceasefire comes amid continued tensions and violence in the region, with significant humanitarian concerns remaining unaddressed. Guterres’ appeal highlights the need for renewed efforts to establish a sustainable peace framework, ensuring the protection and well-being of all those affected by the conflict.
