Cambodia, Thailand Discuss Economic Collaboration at ASEAN Forum in Hanoi

Published on

In a brief yet noteworthy encounter, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul exchanged pleasantries and engaged in an informal chat just before the ASEAN Future Forum commenced in Hanoi, Vietnam. This interaction occurred on the sidelines of the two-day event, offering the leaders a chance to converse casually. Photographs captured the moment as the two leaders shook hands outside the main venue.

Observers in Cambodia interpreted this exchange as an indication that diplomatic channels between Cambodia and Thailand are still open, despite ongoing unresolved border disputes. However, Thai officials were quick to clarify that the encounter did not constitute a formal bilateral meeting. They characterized the conversation as a standard exchange that took place while the leaders awaited the beginning of the forum.

The ASEAN Future Forum, now in its third iteration, serves as a platform for regional leaders to deliberate on development priorities and enhance cooperation throughout Southeast Asia. During the forum, the Vietnamese leadership emphasized the necessity of adapting to global changes and pursuing strategies aimed at long-term regional growth. Their focus was on steering ASEAN towards a future of sustained development.

Vietnamese leaders also called on ASEAN member countries to transcend short-term political agendas, advocate for innovation, and prioritize the younger generations in their development strategies. By doing so, they suggested that ASEAN could better navigate global challenges and unlock new growth opportunities. The message underscored the importance of robust regional cooperation as a means to secure a prosperous and resilient future for Southeast Asia.
