Published on

As global economic ties continue to evolve, Malaysia and China are focusing on strengthening their bilateral relations through trade and technology collaboration. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has embarked on a three-day working visit to China, aiming to bolster the economic partnership between the two nations. This visit underscores the importance of Malaysia-China relations, with China being Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years.

Prime Minister Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday. His itinerary includes visits to Shanghai and Hangzhou, where he will engage with Chinese leaders and participate in key international events. Notably, Anwar is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday, a meeting that highlights the diplomatic significance of his visit.

During his time in Shanghai, Anwar will deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference and attend WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. His engagements will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence and digital trade, reflecting Malaysia’s interest in expanding cooperation in emerging technologies. In Hangzhou, Anwar will participate in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour.

The visit also aims to attract greater foreign investment into Malaysia. Anwar is expected to meet with Chinese business and technology leaders, fostering discussions that could enhance economic ties. This comes as bilateral trade between Malaysia and China reached a significant US$113.82 billion from January to August this year, underlining the robust economic relationship that has been cultivated over the years.
