In the wake of recent conflicts, Iran has raised concerns over the whereabouts of three of its pilots, alleging that Qatar is hindering the investigation into their disappearance. Tehran has claimed that these pilots went missing during hostilities and has pointed fingers at Qatar for not cooperating. However, Qatar has firmly denied these accusations, asserting that it is not detaining any Iranian pilots.

Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from Iran’s armed forces, highlighted that a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting clearance to travel to Qatar to investigate the matter further. He emphasized the need for Qatar to facilitate this visit and appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross to look into the situation. Iran has previously mentioned that it had retrieved the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who reportedly died during an attack linked to the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

In response to Iran’s accusations, Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, refuted the claims of detaining Iranian pilots. He explained that Qatar had contacted the pilots following an alleged airspace violation. According to him, defensive actions were taken when communication attempts with the pilots yielded no response. Qatar’s authorities indicated that they had conducted search and rescue missions to find the pilots and their remains, coordinating with Iran on the handover of one recovered pilot’s remains.

Qatar has asserted that it extended an invitation to Iranian officials in April to send a team to the country to receive details about the search and rescue efforts. However, Qatar states that there was no reply from the Iranian side to this invitation. This disagreement is unfolding amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other neighboring nations following earlier conflicts this year. Notably, Qatar has been playing a significant diplomatic role, attempting to mediate and reduce tensions while fostering dialogue between conflicting parties.
