As the Johor state election approaches on July 11, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Johoreans residing and working in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to make their way back home to cast their votes. Speaking at an event in Kulai, Johor, he emphasized the importance of each vote in influencing the future trajectory of the state. Anwar specifically urged young residents and those working abroad not to miss the opportunity to participate in the electoral process. He clarified that the election results would not impact his role as Prime Minister but would play a crucial role in shaping Johor’s state governance.
Highlighting the distinct roles of federal and state governments, Anwar elaborated on how the federal administration would continue to manage significant infrastructure initiatives, including the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. In contrast, he suggested that state authorities should concentrate on addressing local matters such as the upkeep of public housing, support for small businesses, and enhancing community services. He noted that other Malaysian states have successfully improved public housing through collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, urging Johor to follow suit and enhance its local governance strategies.
Prime Minister Anwar also drew attention to the federal government’s welfare distribution mechanisms, pointing out that financial assistance from the federal level is directly transferred to recipients, eliminating the need for them to queue in person. He contrasted this with the practices of the Johor state administration. Furthermore, he mentioned that the federal government has plans to broaden its welfare assistance programs in the future, though he did not provide additional specifics on these plans.
By encouraging voter participation, Anwar aims to bolster the electoral process and ensure that the voices of Johoreans are heard in deciding the future of their state. His remarks underline a broader appeal for civic engagement while highlighting the ongoing responsibilities and initiatives being undertaken by both federal and state governments to improve the lives of the people in Johor.
